How to say 'Hi' or 'Hello' [Formal/Informal Korean]

Today, I will be teaching how to greet in Korean when you meet somebody.

Greetings when you meet somebody.

Before then, we have something to point out first.

As you may know already, there are two different ways in speaking Korean, which are informal and formal(honorific).

Formal Words/ 존댓말]
In general, we talk formally to somebody elder than me, someone who is not close to me or who is in public situations such as your business meeting.
(e.g. boss, grandma, business partner, etc.)

Informal Words/ 반말]
In general, we talk casually to somebody younger than me or close to me.
(e.g. child, family, friends, etc.)

However, it could be rude if you talk in a casual way even to somebody younger than you if you two are not close to each other. Therefore, it is more recommended to speak formally until you get used to Korean.
Or, just ask the other person if you can speak informally after some time, not at your first meeting.

Now, let's get started.

Greetings in Korean [When you meet somebody]

1. Formal way / 존댓말

Hi / Hello
안녕하세요
[Pronunciation: An nyung ha seh yo]

In some countries, they shake or wave their hands when they meet someone.
However, we usually bow to the elder or each other.

2. Casual way / 반말

Hi / Hello
안녕
[Pronunciataion: An nyung]

In a casual way, we usually wave our hand each other. Sometimes, we just say the word only without any gesture.

You can say 안녕하세요 or 안녕 anytime. We don't have any different expressions depending on time like morning, evening, etc.
Also, 안녕 can be 'bye' depending on its intonation. I will talk about the words meaning good-bye later, too.
